Waipu Extracts Skin Rescue Balm vs Miracle Manuka Creme: which one should you buy?

Both are made in New Zealand, built around mānuka and priced at $89. One buys you an 80g balm for targeted patches, the other a 250g cream you can use all over, every day.

The short answer

If you searched for Waipu Extracts, you’ve probably already decided that a natural, steroid-free mānuka product is worth trying. The real decision is which format suits the skin you’re looking after, and that comes down to how much of it there is and how often you need to apply something.

Waipu’s Skin Rescue Balm makes sense if…

you’re dealing with one or two small, stubborn patches, you want something fragrance-free and preservative-free, and you’re happy to pair it with their Hyper Blend oil, which Waipu recommend as step one.

Miracle Manuka Creme makes sense if…

you need to cover larger areas, you want one product for morning and night with no second step, or you’re buying for your children as well as yourself. You get 250g for the same $89, about a third of the price per gram, with 60 days to change your mind.

Balm or cream: why the format matters more than the mānuka

The quickest way to choose between these two is to look at how each one is made, because the format decides which job it does well.

The Waipu Extracts Mānuka Skin Rescue Balm contains no water. It’s a blend of jojoba, sweet almond, apricot and avocado oils set firm with beeswax, carrying Waipu’s own full-spectrum mānuka leaf extract and kawakawa. Waipu describe it as “a concentrated repair balm, not a soothing cream”, which is a fair summary. A balm like this sits on the surface and forms a seal, so it’s well suited to a small, rough area you want to protect for hours, and a little goes a long way.

Miracle Manuka Creme is a water-based cream made with coconut oil, shea butter and glycerin, carrying mānuka and kānuka leaf oils and marshmallow leaf extract. Because it’s an emulsion, it spreads further and sinks in faster, which makes it practical to apply over arms, legs and backs every morning and night, under clothes, and on children who won’t sit still for long.

Neither format is better for everyone. Most people end up deciding on four questions, and each one has its own section below:

Where the Waipu Skin Rescue Balm does well

Waipu Extracts is a family business on a former dairy farm on Millbrook Road in Waipu, where they grow their own mānuka and extract it themselves. Very few skincare brands can trace an ingredient back to a single paddock, and it shows in how carefully they document their extract. Their balm is a good product, and for some people it’s the better buy.

  • Small, stubborn patches. A firm beeswax balm stays where you put it, which suits an elbow, a knuckle or the back of a hand that needs a protective layer for hours.
  • Lips, cuticles and heels. Reviewers on Waipu’s own site mention using it as a daily lip balm, on sore cuticles and on cracked heels.
  • Skin that reacts to fragrance or preservatives. The balm contains neither, which matters if you know essential oils set you off.
  • Free shipping with no minimum on every New Zealand order.

If that describes you, and you’re comfortable buying Waipu’s Hyper Blend as well (they position the balm as the second step after it), the Skin Rescue Balm is a sensible choice. Its 4.9 rating from 33 reviews is a strong showing for a product that has been on sale for about a year.

Who Miracle Manuka Creme suits better

For most people who land on this page, the bigger need is a daily moisturiser for dry, itchy, eczema-prone skin that covers more than one small patch. That’s where the creme earns its place.

  • You have a lot of skin to cover. A cream spreads across arms, legs and backs far more easily than a firm balm, and a 250g tin lets you apply it generously instead of rationing it.
  • You want it to be part of the daily routine. It’s made for morning and night, so it fits after a shower or bath, before getting dressed and before bed, which is when most people actually remember to moisturise.
  • You’re buying for the family. Sven’s Island say it’s suitable for babies and toddlers, so one tin can do the whole household. As with anything new on young skin, try a small patch first.
  • You’d rather not run a two-step system. There’s no oil to apply first and nothing else to buy to get the result the brand intends.
  • The cost has to work month after month. At $0.36 a gram, or $0.28 on a monthly subscription, it’s the cheaper way to keep skin moisturised every day. Sven’s Island also have dermatologist Dr Leela Athalye recommending the range on their site.

One honest trade-off: the creme carries a light natural scent from its mānuka and kānuka oils, and the essential-oil compounds (such as limonene and linalool) are listed on the label. If you know you react to essential oils, Waipu’s fragrance-free balm is the safer bet.

Waipu’s estimate
6 to 10 weeks on a small area

Put simply, if you only need to treat one small patch, Waipu’s 80g tin will last you a while and the higher price per gram matters less. Waipu say it typically lasts six to ten weeks with twice-daily use on a localised area, and that larger areas will use more. Once you’re covering arms and legs, or looking after more than one person, the gap adds up quickly: the same $89 buys a little over three times as much creme. Creme subscribers also get free gifts with their first order and can pause, skip or cancel at any time.

What happens if it doesn’t suit your skin

Skin is personal, and the people most likely to search for these products have usually tried a few things already. So it’s worth knowing exactly what each brand will do if theirs doesn’t work out for you.

Sven’s Island

60 days

A money-back guarantee on every product, including the creme bought on its own. Their refund policy asks you to email their customer care team within 60 days of receiving your order to arrange a refund or replacement, and it applies to the original purchaser.

Waipu Extracts

30 days

A money-back guarantee “exclusively for our signature 2 steps bundle”, the Mānuka Skin Bundle, with the remaining contents returned in their original packaging. For the balm bought on its own, Waipu’s policy says to contact them and they will “work with you on an exchange or refund”.

If you’re trying a mānuka product for the first time and are not sure how your skin will respond, the longer window and the fact that it covers a single product make Sven’s Island’s guarantee the easier one to rely on.

Prefer a balm? There’s a like-for-like option

If the balm format is what drew you to Waipu, it’s worth knowing that Sven’s Island make one too. The Miracle Manuka Flare Relief Balm uses a beeswax and castor oil base with kānuka and mānuka oils. The 100g tin is $66, which works out at $0.66 a gram, and it carries the same 60-day guarantee.

Our verdict

Both are well-made New Zealand mānuka products from companies that publish their full ingredient lists, and neither one needs talking down. If you’re looking after a single stubborn patch and want a fragrance-free, preservative-free balm from a single-farm source, Waipu’s Skin Rescue Balm is worth the money, ideally used alongside their Hyper Blend as they intend.

If, like most people comparing the two, you need something you can use every day on more than one area, on its own, and on the kids as well, Miracle Manuka Creme is the stronger choice. You get three times the product for the same $89, a 60-day guarantee instead of a bundle-only 30, and more than 200 reviews on the 250g tin alone.

Common questions

Does Waipu Extracts make an eczema cream?

Not at the moment. If you searched for a Waipu Extracts eczema cream, their range is a balm (the Mānuka Skin Rescue Balm), an oil blend (the Mānuka Hyper Blend), a full-spectrum mānuka extract, and a bundle of the balm and oil. If you specifically want a cream, Miracle Manuka Creme is the New Zealand-made mānuka option we compare it with here.

Do I need the Hyper Blend to use the Waipu Skin Rescue Balm?

You can buy the balm on its own, but Waipu describe it as Step 2, “designed to lock in the Hyper Blend applied in Step 1”, and suggest using the two together. The pair is sold as the Mānuka Skin Bundle for $140, and that bundle is the only Waipu product covered by their 30-day money-back guarantee.

Is every Manuka Skin Rescue Balm the same product?

No. “Skin rescue balm” is a common product name, and several brands sell something similarly named. This page compares one specific product: the Waipu Extracts Mānuka Skin Rescue Balm, 80g, $89 NZD.

Which one is better value?

Per gram, Miracle Manuka Creme: $0.36 against $1.11 at the one-off price, and $0.28 on a monthly subscription. If you only need a small amount for one patch, the difference matters less, because an 80g tin of balm lasts a long time on a small area.

Can I use Miracle Manuka Creme on my baby or toddler?

Sven’s Island say it’s suitable for babies and toddlers. As with anything new on young or sensitive skin, try it on a small patch first, and if your child’s skin is broken, weeping or looks infected, check with your GP or Plunket nurse before using any product on it.

Are either of them steroid creams?

No. Both are steroid-free, and neither is a medicine. If you’re currently using a cream your doctor prescribed, keep following their advice and talk to them before changing your routine.

Can I use a cream and a balm together?

Yes. A common approach is a cream over larger areas every day, with a balm kept for rough spots that need extra protection. If you use both on the same area, apply the cream first and the balm on top.

Does Miracle Manuka Creme have a scent?

Yes, a light natural scent that comes from its mānuka and kānuka leaf oils. The essential-oil compounds are listed on the label. If you’re sensitive to essential oils, patch test first, or consider a fragrance-free option.
